With lyrics pointing at the politicians, their false promises and their inability to cope with the Depression that had just plunged millions of Americans into poverty, this song was especially a moving tribute to the glory of all the common workers stricken by joblessness. " Yip " Harburg, who wrote the song was himself managing an important company before going bankrupt in 1929 and finding unemployed. He owed to George Gershwin his partnership with composer Jay Gorney. Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby recorded their own rendition nearly at the same moment. That of Bing Crosby remains better known but without removing anything from its qualities, it is maybe Rudy Vallee who, supported by an effective orchestration, creates a dramatic progression best expressing the emotional content and despair conveyed by the song.
